Mai Spann-Wilson was born in New York and grew up in the small suburb Willingboro, NJ which has produced great talents such as bassist Derrick Hodge and producer Adam Blackstone. As a Singer/Songwriter Mai Spann's music blends hip-hop, R&B, and jazz into a selective and unique art-form. Mai is a gifted poet, emcee, singer, pianist, and record producer with a love for classic soul and old-school hip-hop. He continues to study piano and music business with teacher and jazz guitar great Chuck Anderson. One of his favorite moments as a poet was when he was humbled by the opportunity to open up for Saul Williams at University of Michigan. Recently moving to Philadelphia/Metro area, Mai has hit the open mic scene heavy and has been a feature performer at University of Penn, Rutgers-Camden, University of Maryland, Howard University, and Bowie-State University. He often describes receiving music advice about performing on stage from singer Jill Scott as an "Epiphany" in his music career. In Undergrad, Mai met Producer Freequensee during his sophomore year at the University of Maryland, College Park and began recording with him ever since. Freequensee has produced dope beats for Mai such as "Cold World," "One Shot," and "Fly" off of his mix-tape Freedom Papers. Mai is currently promoting the release of his first studio album "On The Other Side" which officially drops September 20th, 2013. "On The Other Side" is not just an album but a movement! This album was created out of conversation Mai had with a youth he mentored who said "I'm tired of seeing the same for blocks...I want to see something different...I want to see a waterfall." This experience inspired Mai to start a nationwide movement that would take urban youth out of their daily environment and expose them to a beautiful and easily accessible area of their city that they never visited before. Look for the "On The Other Side Movement" to take place for the first time fall 2013.
